Grace Tobin (b. 1993) investigates how the complex relationships we hold to the spaces we inhabit impact our sense of self and identity. Grace employs the figure and abstracted botanical forms to re-imagine how an environment can mirror the psychological and physiological connections we create to our world and inform a sense of identity through time. The graphical painting style paired with the repetitive pattern that Grace deploys mirror the themes of imperfection and repetition in our lives and routines.

The spaces Grace paints with much subtracted material, present a segmented reality. Her work presents the speculative, contemplative times in which we are formed, informed, and reminded by our surroundings. The unknown, the intangible, and the waiting expressed through her work embody the idle and languorous sense of self that we often only meditate on in environments in which we find comfort. With paint and pattern combined, Grace expresses how feelings, experiences, and understandings can all change with a bit of perspective.
