At the core of Colin Fleck’s practice exists narration. Stories live in every work he produces, even when not immediately obvious. Fleck draws from personal experiences, mythologies, and natural phenomena in an attempt to engage viewers with narratives both familiar and strange simultaneously. His subject matter often becomes a personal meditation on his struggles to reconcile early years of growing up in the American South and the influences that the region continues to have on his identity today.
When painting, Fleck begins with loose abstraction, allowing the energy of a piece to form before the content of its image. In this way, a story presents itself to be uncovered, allowing him to be as engaged and surprised by the narrative as his viewers. Fleck intends to utilize the abstracted aesthetic debris to create narrative spaces that activate the imaginations of those who encounter them, asking more questions of its audience than providing answers.
